The Eastern Wild Turkey is found
abundantly in the state of New Jersey
and most of the eastern United
States. According to the National
Wild Turkey Federation, an adult
male, called a tom or a gobbler, can
grow to a height of 4 feet and can
weigh up to 20 pounds! A mature
female, called a hen, can be nearly as
tall, but weighs considerably less -
between 8 to 12 pounds.
Both genders have long, powerful legs and are born with spurs that, on the males, grow
to be about two-inches long and curved. These spurs can be used as defensive weapons.
Turkeys can run up to speeds of 25 mph and can fly up to to 55 mph!
Reports of aggressive wild turkey behavior are not at all unusual. Turkeys have been
known to "stalk" humans and pets. Because they follow, literally, a "pecking order"
within their own species, they will consider humans to be inferior and will go to great
lengths to assert their dominance.
However, methods of handling these aggressive turkeys vary from state to state. Because
the species was relatively endangered some 80 years ago, preservation efforts
commenced and some degree of conservation and protection of the species remain today.
In fact, in some states - such as New Jersey - the protections have in fact been widened.
Recently, an incident occurred where an officer of the New Jersey Division of Fish and
Wildlife, responding to numerous complaints of aggressive turkeys harrassing citizens and
consistenly blocking traffic, was forced to dispatch several of the turkeys in a humane
fashion. The officer was following department protocols and has been shown to have
acted appropriately. Unfortunately, some citizens protested and the Division of Fish and
Wildlife has decided to remove themselves from the equation. They are transferring the
power of handling aggressive turkeys from the state to individual towns and/or private
contractors.
Therefore, it is possible that, if you have a wild turkey harrassment issue, you may have
trouble finding an agency to help you with the concern. Spring is a pivotal season for
several reasons. It is both turkey breeding season, and state-mandated turkey harvesting
season. It is during these months that most wild turkeys will give reason for a complaint
to be issued. If you have trouble finding help with aggressive turkeys during this time
period, please call All Wildlife Removal Service. As long as it is within the confines of
the proper turkey season, and permission is given by the property owner, we would be
happy to harvest turkeys at no charge to you. (Until better clarification is issued from the
state, it is difficult to ascertain whether Wildlife Removal services are legally permitted to
charge for wild turkey removal at this time. Therefore, we will gladly perform the service
as a courtesy to the property owner.)
